ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most serious public health events of this century. There have been more than 670 million confirmed cases and more than 6 million deaths worldwide. From the emergence of the Alpha variant to the later rampant Omicron variant, the high transmissibility and pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 accelerate the research and development of effective vaccines. Against this background, mRNA vaccines stepped onto the historical stage and became an important tool for COVID-19 prevention. AREAS COVERED: This article introduces the characteristics of different mRNA vaccines in the prevention of COVID-19, including antigen selection, therapeutic mRNA design and modification, and different delivery systems of mRNA molecules. It also summarizes and discusses the mechanisms, safety, effectiveness, side effects, and limitations of current COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. EXPERT OPINION: Therapeutic mRNA molecules have plenty of advantages, including flexible design, rapid production, sufficient immune activation, safety without the risk of genome insertion in the host cells, and no viral vectors or particles involved, making them an important tool to fight diseases in the future. However, the application of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines also faces many challenges, such as storage and transportation, mass production, and nonspecific immunity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has gained increasing international attention in recent decades. The act of incorporating acupuncture treatment into the routine treatment of COVID-19 in China drove us to review the 100 most influential articles of the last 20 years to learn about the current status and trends of acupuncture. METHOD: Articles related to acupuncture from January 1, 2001 to July 4, 2022 were searched in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection database. The top 100 most cited publications were selected and information were extracted. Software VOSviewer, GraphPad Prism, Scimago Graphica and CiteSpace were used to visualize and analyze the extracted data. RESULT: The 100 most cited articles were identified, with an average of 218 citations (range: 131-625). The majority of the top 100 articles were from the United States (n = 53). The institution that published the most highly cited papers was Harvard University (n = 16). The most influential team was Klaus Linde's group. Pain was the top ranked journal in terms of number of publications. The largest clusters for co-occurrence keyword analysis focused on acupuncture and electroacupuncture analgesia and brain imaging responses to acupuncture stimulation via functional MRI. The two highest strength burst keywords were "randomized controlled trials" and "osteoarthritis", with "randomized controlled trials" being a consistent burst keyword from 2011 to the present. CONCLUSION: This study provides insight into articles of historical significance in the field of acupuncture through bibliometric analysis. These data should provide clinicians and researchers with insight into future directions related to acupuncture.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Sacral neuromodulation is an effective, minimally invasive treatment for refractory lower urinary tract dysfunction. However, regular postoperative programming is crucial for the maintenance of the curative effects of electronic sacral stimulator devices. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) limited the ability of practitioners to perform traditional face-to-face programming of these stimulators. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the application of remote programming technology for sacral neuromodulation during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Materials and methods: We retrospectively collected data including baseline and programming information of all patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction who underwent sacral neuromodulation remote programming in China after the outbreak of COVID-19 (i.e., December 2019). The patients also completed a self-designed telephone questionnaire on the subject. Results: A total of 51 patients from 16 centers were included. They underwent 180 total remote programming visits, and 118, 2, 25, and 54 voltage, current, pulse width, and frequency adjustments, respectively, were performed. Additionally, remote switching on and off was performed 8 times; impedance test, 54 times; and stimulation contact replacement, 25 times. The demand for remote programming was the highest during the first 6 months of sacral neuromodulation (average, 2.39 times per person). In total, 36 out of the 51 patients completed the questionnaire survey. Of these, all indicated that they chose remote programming to minimize unnecessary travel because they had been affected by COVID-19. The questionnaire also showed that remote programming could reduce the number of patient visits to the hospital, save time, reduce financial costs, and would be easy for patients to master. All surveyed patients indicated that they were satisfied with remote programming and were willing to recommend it to other patients. Conclusion: Remote programming for sacral neuromodulation is feasible, effective, safe, and highly recommended by patients with refractory lower urinary tract dysfunction. Remote programming technology has great development and application potential in the post-pandemic era.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019, the 2019-nCov coronavirus has appeared diverse mutational characteristics due to its own flexible conformation. One multiple-mutant strain (Omicron) with surprisingly infective activity outburst, and affected the biological activities of current drugs and vaccines, making the epidemic significantly difficult to prevent and control, and seriously threaten health around the world. Importunately exploration of mutant characteristics for novel coronavirus Omicron can supply strong theoretical guidance for learning binding mechanism of mutant viruses. What's more, full acknowledgement of key mutated-residues on Omicron strain can provide new methodology of the novel pathogenic mechanism to human ACE2 receptor, as well as the subsequent vaccine development. METHODS: In this research, 3D structures of 32 single-point mutations of 2019-nCov were firstly constructed, and 32-sites multiple-mutant Omicron were finally obtained based one the wild-type virus by homology modeling method. One total number of 33 2019-nCov/ACE2 complex systems were acquired by protein-protein docking, and optimized by using preliminary molecular dynamic simulations. Binding free energies between each 2019-nCov mutation system and human ACE2 receptor were calculated, and corresponding binding patterns especially the regions adjacent to mutation site were analyzed. The results indicated that one total number of 6 mutated sites on the Omicron strain played crucial role in improving binding capacities from 2019-nCov to ACE2 protein. Subsequently, we performed long-term molecular dynamic simulations and protein-protein binding energy analysis for the selected 6 mutations. 3 infected individuals, the mutants T478K, Q493R and G496S with lower binding energies -66.36, -67.98 and -67.09 kcal/mol also presents the high infectivity. These findings indicated that the 3 mutations T478K, Q493R and G496S play the crucial roles in enhancing binding affinity of Omicron to human ACE2 protein. All these results illuminate important theoretical guidance for future virus detection of the Omicron epidemic, drug research and vaccine development.

ABSTRACT

Background: Even if COVID-19 vaccine has gradually been adopted in the world, information of side effects and crosstalk in patients with spinal tumors is absent due to the exclusion from clinical research. In this research, we aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety for the patients with spinal tumors treated by denosumab. Methods: In this retrospective research, 400 patients under treatment of denosumab against spinal tumors in real-clinical experience were grouped into two cohorts according to the treatment of COVID-19 vaccine. And linked hospital data, serum samples and unsolicited related adverse events had been collected from January 22nd 2021 to June 1st 2021 respectively. Results: 233 patients of all participants who received regular treatment of denosumab were vaccinated by mRNA or inactivated vaccine. Patients of metastatic disease and primary osseous spinal tumor showed similar distribution in both two groups. Over the study period, within 176 patients tested the status of serologic response of vaccine, 88(81.48%) and 41(87.23%) individuals injected one or two inactivated vaccines had effective antibody against SARS-CoV-2 infections. As 21 patients (85.71%) treated by mRNA vaccine did. Considering of the safety of vaccine, most common systemic adverse events were nausea or vomiting (45 events vs 23events). Interestingly, fewer participants in the vaccine group were statistically recorded in local adverse events than in the placebo group (16 events vs 33 events). Conclusions: Our initial real-clinical experience suggests that COVID-19 vaccines are likely safe and effective in in patients with spinal tumors receiving denosumab treatment.

In observational studies, herbal prescriptions are usually studied in the form of "similar prescriptions". At present, the classification of prescriptions is mainly based on clinical experience judgment, but there are some problems in manual judgment, such as lack of unified criteria, labor consumption, and difficulty in verification. In the construction of a database of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19), our research group tried to classify real-world herbal prescriptions using a similarity matching algorithm. The main steps include 78 target prescriptions are determined in advance; four levels of importance labeling shall be carried out for the drugs of each target prescription; the combination, format conversion, and standardization of drug names of the prescriptions to be identified in the herbal medicine database; calculate the similarity between the prescriptions to be identified and each target prescription one by one; prescription discrimination is performed based on the preset criteria; remove the name of the prescriptions with "large prescriptions cover the small". Through the similarity matching algorithm, 87.49% of the real prescriptions in the herbal medicine database of this study can be identified, which preliminarily proves that this method can complete the classification of herbal prescriptions. However, this method does not consider the influence of herbal dosage on the results, and there is no recognized standard for the weight of drug importance and criteria, so there are some limitations, which need to be further explored and improved in future research.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic in March 2020, and since then it has had a significant impact on healthcare including on solid-organ transplantation. Based on age, immunosuppression and prevalence of chronic comorbidities, heart transplant recipients are at high risk of adverse outcomes associated with COVID-19. In our center, 31 heart transplant patients were diagnosed with COVID-19 from March 2020 to September 2021. They required: hospitalization (39%), intensive care (10%) and mechanical ventilation (6%) of patients with overall short-term mortality of 3%. Early outpatient use of anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies in our heart transplant recipients was associated with a reduction in the risk of hospitalization, need for intensive care, and death related to COVID-19. In prior multicenter studies, completed in different geographic areas and pandemic timeframes, diverse rates of hospitalization (38-91%), mechanical ventilation (4-38%) and death (16-33%) have been reported. Progression of disease and adverse outcomes were most significantly associated with severity of lymphopenia, chronic co-morbid conditions like older age, chronic allograft vasculopathy, increased body mass index as well as intensity of baseline immune-suppression. In this article, we also review the current roles and limitations of vaccination, anti-viral agents, and anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies in the management of heart transplant recipients. Our single center experience, considered together with other studies indicates a trend toward improved outcomes among heart transplant patients with COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: Only a few studies have explored the prevalence of normal-weight obesity in young adults or the development of a simple evaluation index for body fat percentage. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the prevalence of normal-weight obesity in young Chinese adults and use anthropometric measurements to develop an evaluation index. METHODS: In total, 1322 college students participated in the study and were divided into the normal-weight lean, normal-weight obese, and overweight and obese groups based on their body mass index and body fat percentage. The differences in body composition, circumference, and circumference ratio among these three groups were examined. RESULTS: When exploring the correlation between the circumference ratio and body fat percentage, the circumference ratio was suitable for early screening of abnormal body fat percentage, and the cutoff value was calculated. Body composition and circumference were significantly different among the three groups: (waist + hip)-to-height, hip-to-height, and waist-to-height ratios were strongly correlated with body fat percentage. CONCLUSIONS: (Waist + hip)-to-height ratio can be used as a simple evaluation index for indicating abnormal body fat percentage when higher than 1.032 in male and 1.047 in female individuals. Downregulating the normal upper limit for body mass index to 24.4 and 23.8 kg/m2 in male and female individuals, respectively, is recommended. Body mass index combined with (waist + hip)-to-height ratio allowed for more accurate screening of normal-weight obesity as an easy and cost-free evaluation measure for abnormal body fat percentage.

ABSTRACT

We propose a new solution under the Bayesian framework to simultaneously estimate mean-based asynchronous changepoints in spatially correlated functional time series. Unlike previous methods that assume a shared changepoint at all spatial locations or ignore spatial correlation, our method treats changepoints as a spatial process. This allows our model to respect spatial heterogeneity and exploit spatial correlations to improve estimation. Our method is derived from the ubiquitous cumulative sum (CUSUM) statistic that dominates changepoint detection in functional time series. However, instead of directly searching for the maximum of the CUSUM-based processes, we build spatially correlated two-piece linear models with appropriate variance structure to locate all changepoints at once. The proposed linear model approach increases the robustness of our method to variability in the CUSUM process, which, combined with our spatial correlation model, improves changepoint estimation near the edges. We demonstrate through extensive simulation studies that our method outperforms existing functional changepoint estimators in terms of both estimation accuracy and uncertainty quantification, under either weak or strong spatial correlation, and weak or strong change signals. Finally, we demonstrate our method using a temperature data set and a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) study. Supplementary materials accompanying this paper appear online. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic liver disease (CLD) patients and liver transplant (LT) recipients have an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines in CLD patients and LT recipients is poorly understood. The present study aimed to evaluate the immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines in CLD patients and LT recipients. METHODS: We searched electronic databases for eligible studies. Two reviewers independently conducted the literature search, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias of included studies. The rates of detectable immune response were pooled from single-arm studies. For comparative studies, we compared the rates of detectable immune response between patients and healthy controls. The meta-analysis was conducted using the Stata software with a random-effects model. RESULTS: In total, 19 observational studies involving 4191 participants met the inclusion criteria. The pooled rates of detectable humoral immune response after two doses of COVID-19 vaccination in CLD patients and LT recipients were 95% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 88%-99%) and 66% (95% CI = 57%-74%) respectively. After two doses of vaccination, the humoral immune response rate was similar in CLD patients and healthy controls (risk ratio [RR] = 0.96; 95% CI = 0.90-1.02; p = .14). In contrast, LT recipients had a lower humoral immune response rate after two doses of vaccination than healthy controls (RR = 0.68; 95% CI = 0.59-0.77; p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis demonstrated that COVID-19 vaccination induced strong humoral immune responses in CLD patients but poor humoral immune responses in LT recipients.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread worldwide as a severe pandemic and caused enormous global health and economical damage. Since December 2019, more than 197 million cases have been reported, causing 4.2 million deaths. In the settings of pandemic it is an urgent necessity for the development of an effective COVID-19 treatment. While in-vitro screening of hundreds of antibodies isolated from convalescent patients is challenging due to its high cost, use of computational methods may provide an attractive solution in selecting the top candidates. Here, we developed a computational approach (SARS-AB) for binding prediction of spike protein SARS-CoV-2 with monoclonal antibodies. We validated our approach using existing structures in the protein data bank (PDB), and demonstrated its prediction power in antibody-spike protein binding prediction. We further tested its performance using antibody sequences from the literature where crystal structure is not available, and observed a high prediction accuracy (AUC = 99.6%). Finally, we demonstrated that SARS-AB can be used to design effective antibodies against novel SARS-CoV-2 mutants that might escape the current antibody protections. We believe that SARS-AB can significantly accelerate the discovery of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and its mutants.

Public health problems, such as the spread of COVID-19 and chronic diseases, are mainly caused by the daily life activities of community residents. Therefore, there is a need to build a healthy and safe community living circle through the evaluation of health behaviors in daily life. This paper proposes a theoretical framework and evaluation system for public health safety in community living circles, from a behavioral motivation perspective. Firstly, based on the behavioral motivation theory, a theoretical framework for the study of public health safety in community living circles is constructed from the perspective of the "project-activity-health" coupling relationship network, regarding community residents' daily life activities. Then, a public health safety evaluation system for community living circles is proposed based on this framework, which includes the following: (1) identifying the scope of community living circles based on Spatio-temporal Activities Analysis; (2) Based on the theory of protection motivation, a health behavior evaluation model based on the three elements of "spatial and temporal geographical environment-daily life activities-public health safety" is established; (3) Based on the hierarchy of public health problems, a public health safety evaluation model of the community living circle is established. The behavioral motivation-based evaluation system explores a new approach and research paradigm for community-scale public health safety theory; this will help to achieve the goal of "healthy communities" when further empirical evidence is available.

Accumulating evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 impairs the adaptive immune system during acute infection. Still, it remains largely unclear whether the frequency and functions of T and B cells return to normal after the recovery of COVID-19. Here, we analyzed immune repertoires and SARS-CoV-2-specific neutralization antibodies in a prospective cohort of 40 COVID-19 survivors with a six-month follow-up after hospital discharge. Immune repertoire sequencing revealed abnormal T- and B-cell expression and function with large TCR/BCR clones, decreased diversity, abnormal class switch recombination and somatic hypermutation. A decreased number of B cells but an increased proportion of CD19+ CD138+ B cells were found in COVID-19 survivors. The proportion of CD4+ T cells, especially circulating follicular helper T (cTfh) cells, was increased, whereas the frequency of CD3+ CD4- T cells was decreased. SARS-CoV-2-specific neutralization IgG and IgM antibodies were identified in all survivors, especially those recorded with severe COVID-19 who showed a higher inhibition rate of neutralization antibodies. All severe cases complained of more than one COVID-19 sequelae after 6 months of recovery. Overall, our findings indicate that SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies remain detectable even after 6 months of recovery. Because of their abnormal adaptive immune system with a low number of CD3+ CD4- T cells and high susceptibility to infections, COVID-19 patients might need more time and medical care to fully recover from immune abnormalities and tissue damage. ABSTRACT

To inhibit the COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) outbreak, unprecedented nationwide lockdowns were implemented in China in early 2020, resulting in a marked reduction of anthropogenic emissions. However, reasons for the insignificant improvement in air quality in megacities of northeast China, including Shenyang, Changchun, Jilin, Harbin, and Daqing, were scarcely reported. We assessed the influences of meteorological conditions and changes in emissions on air quality in the five megacities during the COVID-19 lockdown (February 2020) using the WRF-CMAQ model. Modeling results indicated that meteorology contributed a 14.7% increment in Air Quality Index (AQI) averaged over the five megacities, thus, the local unfavorable meteorology was one of the causes to yield little improved air quality. In terms of emission changes, the increase in residential emissions (+15%) accompanied by declining industry emissions (-15%) and transportation (-90%) emissions resulted in a slight AQI decrease of 3.1%, demonstrating the decrease in emissions associated with the lockdown were largely offset by the increment in residential emissions. Also, residential emissions contributed 42.3% to PM2.5 concentration on average based on the Integrated Source Apportionment tool. These results demonstrated the key role residential emissions played in determining air quality. The findings of this study provide a scenario that helps make appropriate emission mitigation measures for improving air quality in this part of China.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the persistent symptoms in preschool children after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant infection, and to provide a basis for developing follow-up plans after infection and reducing and preventing related symptoms after infection. METHODS: The children, aged 0-5 years, who had Omicron BA.2 infection and were discharged from the pediatric ward of Shanghai Renji Hospital South Branch from April 13 to May 8, 2022, were enrolled as subjects, and related demographic and clinical data were collected. The children were followed up from the time to SARS-CoV-2 clearance for two consecutive tests with an interval of >24 hours till 4-5 weeks after clearance, and telephone follow-up was performed on the primary caregivers to investigate related persistent symptoms. RESULTS: Among the 103 children who met the inclusion criteria, there were 61 boys and 42 girls, with a median age of 18 months. The primary caregivers who had received two or more doses of COVID-19 vaccine accounted for 64.1% (66/103). Fever (98.1%, 101/103) was the most common symptom in these children, followed by cough/expectoration (63.1%, 65/103), gastrointestinal problems (37.9%, 39/103), loss of appetite (30.1%, 31/103), weakness (27.2%, 28/103), and nasal obstruction/runny nose (16.5%, 17/103). The follow-up at 1 month after discharge reported that 44 children (42.7%) had at least one persistent symptom, including respiratory symptoms in 14 children (13.6%) and gastrointestinal problems in 19 children (18.4%). The children whose primary caregivers received two or more doses of COVID-19 vaccine had a significantly shorter time to SARS-CoV-2 clearance than those whose primary caregivers did not receive or only received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine (P<0.05), while there was no significant difference between the two groups in the proportion of children with at least one persistent symptom (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Nearly half of the preschool children may have related persistent symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection, mainly gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms. Most of the symptoms may be mild, and continuous follow-up is needed to observe their outcomes. Vaccination of COVID-19 vaccine for primary caregivers has a certain protective effect on children.

ABSTRACT

Objective: We investigated the effects of COVID-19 fear on negative moods among college students, and assessed the efficacy of physical exercise behavior as a moderator variable. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Students from three colleges and universities in Shangqiu City, Henan Province and Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province were enrolled in this study, which was performed during the COVID-19 pandemic using an online questionnaire. A total of 3,133 college students completed the questionnaire. Measurement tools included the COVID-19 Phobia Scale (C19P-S), Depression-Anxiety-Stress Self-Rating Scale (DASS), and the Physical Activity Behavior Scale (PARS-3). Results: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the rates of depression, anxiety, and stressful negative moods among college students were 35.5, 65.5, and 10.95%, respectively; there was a positive correlation between COVID-19 fear and negative moods among college students (r = 0.479, p < 0.001), which was negatively correlated with physical exercise behavior (r = -0.4, p < 0.001); the regulating effects of physical exercise behavior were significant (ΔR2 = 0.04, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The rate of negative moods among college students is high, and the fear for COVID-19 is one of the key factors that lead to negative moods. Physical exercise can modulate the impact of COVID-19 fear among college students on negative moods. Studies should elucidate on mental health issues among different populations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Wastewater-based epidemiology has proven to be a supportive tool to better comprehend the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the disease moves into endemic stage, the surveillance at wastewater sub-catchments such as pump station and manholes is providing a novel mechanism to examine the reemergence and to take measures that can prevent the spread. However, there is still a lack of understanding when it comes to wastewater-based epidemiology implementation at the smaller intra-city level for better granularity in data, and dilution effect of rain precipitation at pump stations. For this study, grab samples were collected from six areas of Seattle between March-October 2021. These sampling sites comprised five manholes and one pump station with population ranging from 2580 to 39,502 per manhole/pump station. The wastewater samples were analyzed for SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations, and we also obtained the daily COVID-19 cases (from individual clinical testing) for each corresponding sewershed, which ranged from 1 to 12 and the daily incidence varied between 3 and 64 per 100,000 of population. Rain precipitation lowered viral RNA levels and sensitivity of viral detection but wastewater total ammonia (NH4+-N) and phosphate (PO43--P) were shown as potential chemical indicators to calibrate/level out the dilution effect. These chemicals showed the potential in improving the wastewater surveillance capacity of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a highly pathogenic respiratory disease that mainly affects adults and elderly patients. Yet, over the past three years, there were an increasing number of infected children; however, only a few cases of infants with reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-confirmed COVID-19 and chest computed tomography (CT) normal have been reported. Herein, we reported a single case of a patient (a 3-mo-old girl) with COVID-19, including her clinical and imaging findings. CASE SUMMARY: The patient with fever, diarrhea came to fever clinic. Her chest CT was normal. The patient was treated accordingly, the fever disappeared while diarrhea persisted, what's more, RT-PCR testing of nasopharyngeal swab showed positive results; thus, the patient was admitted to the pediatric department on the 5th day of onset. The child was given systematic treatment, and all her symptoms significantly improved. Consecutive RT-PCR tests were negative after examining the pharyngeal swabs but positive after analyzing anal swabs. She was discharged on the 31st day of hospitalization. CONCLUSION: This report provides useful references for treating infantile COVID-19 cases with diarrhea or other non-respiratory symptoms and normal chest CT scan. Given the persistent positive RT-PCR results of anal swabs, the possibility of fecal-oral transmission of COVID-19 should be considered.

ABSTRACT

Background Since 2020, longer stay-at-home time in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the weight-related behaviors of Chinese population. Objectives To explore the demographic and basic characteristics of body fat scale users and to investigate the changes in obesity-related body composition of overweight and obese users during COVID-19. Further, we analyzed the factors associated with successful weight loss and improved body composition changes in overweight and obese people. Methods The study included 107,419 Chinese adults registered in the smart app connecting to the body fat scale in 2020 to describe the demographic characteristics of body fat scale users by Unpaired Student’s t-test and Chi-Square test. Subsequently, overweight and obese participants with body mass index (BMI) of more than 24 kg/m2 were screened to investigate the independent factors associated with effective weight loss and improved body composition changes by multivariable logistic regression analyses. Results During the pandemic, the number of body fat scale users increased markedly compared with pre-pandemic. Over half of the participants were women and with normal baseline BMI. Based on BMI classification, multivariable logistic regressions showed that age, gender, measurement frequency classification, baseline BMI, visceral adipose index and skeletal muscle rate were associated with weight loss and fat loss in the overweight and obese population, with the high-frequency measurement being the most important factor for effective weight and fat loss. In the population with normal BMI obesity, younger age was the most significant factor for effective fat loss. Conclusion During the COVID-19 pandemic, participation in self-monitored weight loss increased markedly compared with pre-pandemic, and women accounted for the majority. We found that many overweight and obese participants achieved weight loss goals by smart body fat scales, and the effectiveness of weight and fat loss was greater in obese participants than in overweight participants, both based on BMI and PBF classification. In addition, promoting the usage of smart body fat scales could contribute to more effective weight and fat loss in the overweight and obese population based on BMI classification. However, in the population with normal BMI obesity, young subjects might be easier to successfully lose fat compared with the elder. Digital self-management by smart body fat scales could become a promising approach for the obese population with high BMI to lose weight and keep healthy.
